Consultations are the most important part of any client/stylist relationship. In a consultation, we are not just trying to figure out what you want to do with your hair, but actually establishing trust and baseline communication skills. This is the opportunity to be able to bridge the gap between what you, as the client, envision for your hair, and the technical way in which the stylist will be able to best achieve the

desired effect. Here are some tips to being able to streamline this process so that we, as the stylist can help you reach your hair goals.

Come in with clearly defined boundaries with your hair. If for some reason you may not know what you particularly want, that is very okay, but make sure you can express what you DO NOT want, which can be just as important. These clearly defined boundaries are very important to make sure that you and the stylist are on the same page.
Bring inspiration pictures but be realistic, the inspo photo may have thick curly hair while you have 12 straight hairs! Images help to bridge the communication gap between what you see and what the stylist can achieve.
Also, it is okay to find something that you kind of like, and then specify what parts you don’t, It just helps create a visual.
Know what products you are currently using on your hair.

These tips work for both haircuts and color, but the most important thing is to be able to have a clear understanding of what you like, or don’t like, and that we communicate.

We are a Redken Elite salon and use exclusively Redken colors. We continue to educate ourselves to keep abreast of the latest trends.

The integrity of your hair plays a huge role in how your color takes and how long it holds. We prescribe Redken and Pureology shampoos and conditioners to not only prepare the hair but to maintain it. And about every 4th or 5th shampoo your hair needs a 'treatment' aka deep conditioner.

Now before you fine haired girls freak out let me tell you that I only have 12 hairs and I deep condition once a week. It is all in what you use! I choose the Redken Cat treatment. It is a water based protein treatment that does not add any weight. Your hair is 80% protein and 10% moisture then lipids, melanin and some other stuff, so protein is very important to keep your hair strong and moisture gives softness. There is also Redken Lamaller water that we all love too! But ask your stylist what will work best for your hair.

Purple shampoo is an absolute necessity for blondes to use in between hair coloring sessions as it easily helps keep your blonde beautiful.

Coming in for something new or your first time to have color done here at the AE?

Bring pictures- but just remember your hair is probably different from the person in the photo so we can get get in the ballpark but it will rarely look just like a photo ( most of which are photoshopped or have lots of special lighting) Tell us your hair history, at least the last couple of years- your color depends on it. And feel free to ask questions. And always talk about the budget! Most of that gorgeous hair we are seeing these days takes more than one visit and it cost $$$! So don't be afraid to ask.

We love good memes and jokes but there are a few we do not love and I feel like we need to make you aware of a few of them.

*When booking an appointment please book it under the name of the actual person coming in, aka your teenage sons name or your husband or the big one your daughter with hair to her bum. It helps us with so much behind the scene stuff such as timing and it helps the stylists when working on their goals.

*When you are going to be late, we know it happens please call so we can prepare and we will try and call you when we are running more than 10 minutes late. We do realize that sometimes it just cannot be helped and the same goes for us. But when you walk in 15 minutes late with Starbucks...

*If you are unhappy with your hair for some reason please let us know within 2 weeks. Your hair grows on average 1/2 an inch a month so when you wait longer than that it is running into the window of time for your next service. We know your hair is not average but this is our policy and we ask that you respect it by letting us know asap.

*PLEASE refrain from using your speaker phone in the salon. I hate to even have to say it. Same goes for watching the latest episode of Yellowstone with no earbuds. AND you know that some girls are just not made for speakerphone IE. Terri Hoover

*Just like you and your family, we get sick, have personal trauma and get to go on vacations. Thank you for understanding that, we know sometimes it is inconvenient but we try to accommodate you by working extra hours when possible or offering you the opportunity to see other stylist at last resort. But in that same conversation when you cancel at the last minute or call at midnight the night before to cancel the next day because something better came up, you can't 'make up that time' for your stylist/salon. So tipping extra the next time is a nice gesture but doesn't fix the problem. Which leads us to the next point...

*Our staff works on commission therefore if you miss an appointment the stylist & the salon go unpaid for that block of time .

*We are just trying to make the salon experience lovely for everyone. The Butterfly Effect is true even in the salon.

This year instead of a New Years resolution we are going to operate off of a phrase... Remember the butterfly effect...

POST DAMN-DEMIC....

I do want to talk a little about post-damn-demic business. It has been hard. Many businesses didn't make it but with a lot of hard work, Rebeccas hard head and determination and your loyalty we kept our doors open. That was no small feat. What we have experienced has been the fact that it has been harder to hire, more expensive to operate and retail sales have been SO much more competitive. We are here to compete. Hair products, make up, skin care and boutique sales are what have enabled us to be in this beautiful location, have people to answer the phones, check you out and a thousand other little things that make your visit a great experience. But we don't want to pedal products. We spend a lot of money and time to learn about and choose the right products to keep the integrity of your hair and the stylist spend a lot of time learning about them all while considering you and your hair.

I say all of this because in the last couple of years we have seen an increase of people who say they will pick up 'our suggestions' somewhere else or worse yet take a picture of the product so they can buy it on Amazon. We have sales, a loyalty program, exchange products when one doesn't work for you and will match legitimate prices from other brick and mortar stores. We are working hard to earn your loyalty and so appreciate when we receive it.

Dec. 2005 my son Jake was killed in a car accident. A year later I started Clickit4life. The foundation was started to get the attention of young people where they are, in the car. It has been around for almost 18 years now.

The CDC says that 56% (in 2020) of young people between the ages of 13-19 were not buckled in when they met their demise. That number has vacillated between 50-56% over the years. When I checked today it said between 51- 61%. We can do better. Help me get the word out please. Check out the website below to learn more.

Meet Terri Hoover

We were lucky to catch up with Terri Hoover recently and have shared our conversation below.

Terri, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?

My story has been full of risks from the beginning, from a high school drop out going to cosmetology school and buying a salon all in a years time to navigating thru the pandemic after losing 11 employees. As a single parent, bartending at night and going to school during the day my days were exhausting from the beginning. My grandparents had left me a little money and when I completed school (the first thing I ever remember completing as an adult), I went to work for a product company. I thought I was going to be a ‘platform artist’ or at least they aluded to that and ended up schlepping hairspray. So one day I walked into a little hole in the wall salon and came out knowing I was going to buy it. I called my aunt who was in charge of my money and told her of my big plan. To which she replied, ‘ Are you kidding me! You have never held a job over 6 months!” I have spent the last 34 years proving that I could do it! She died last year so I guess I won. I have moved the salon 3 times over the years, gotten divorced, remarried, had 3 sons, buried one of them, taken on a partner, grown-trained hundreds of stylist/associates and stayed over the million dollar mark even during the ‘damn-demic’! In 2005 my oldest son Jake was killed in a car accident. He was not wearing his seatbelt. I began a billboard campaign to get young peoples attention where they are … in the car to let them know this can happen to you! Over 50% of young people who are killed in car accidents are not buckled in! So we have an art wall in the salon where we feature mostly local artist and a portion of the sales goes to our foundation. We also sell art and jewelry by Nancy Pfau for the cause and all those proceeds go direclty to the charity.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I grew up in a small town in East Texas and got out as soon as I could looking for the answer to boredom to mere existance. I found that in hair with a detour into the bar industry. I used the bartending as a means to an end that I did not know I was looking for. Hair and make up were always an afterthought for me so when my friend/husbands assistant suggested I do hair I laughed. But from my first day at school I knew this could be my ticket! The first 9 years I literally just got by! I had no idea what I was doing but I was determined. Then my only competition in the neighborhood sold her salon and came to work with me. She was older, wiser and loved to help others succeed. I became her project. Then came a hairdresser who was super talented and had worked in exotic places like Switzerland and Italy and finally the crown jewel came… my first assistant, Rebecca who is now my business partner and truely the brains of the business. I have great ideas and she makes them happen. Her rise in the company is what I am most proud of. The older wiser lady died in 2020, the world traveler is still here and Rebecca and I are still training our future and the future of our industry.

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?

Around 2003 we were just existing, barely making payroll some weeks and a fellow salon owner called to tell me about a business consulting group she had begun to use. The cost seemed so prohibited I mean we almost did not make payroll the week before! But this salon owner / friend was so convinced that this was our answer that I jumped in. Then I talked to my husband. You know it is easier to ask forgiveness that permission sometimes! Rebecca had been working in the office with me by then so we packed up and flew to Minnisota. The night before the first class I freaked! What had I done! This cost so much money! What was I thinking! As we drove back to the hotel after dinner Rebecca asked me ‘Wheres your faith? I thought you prayed about this?’ Well, I did but I didn’t wait for the answer! So I fretted! The next morning while she was in the shower I flipped thru channels and just like the character on TV was speaking directly to me, loud and clear he shouted ‘WHERE IS YOUR FAITH?” Wait, is he talking to me? So off we went to class and I had a new sense of direction that seemed to come from above.

We bought in hook,line and sinker and still use that same company today. We are a commission salon and 5 of our stylist took home 6 figures this last year! That is a huge win for all of us!

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?

I am kind of a natural communicator. Being a bartender and a hairdresser fed that bent over the years. I write a newsletter quarterly to our clients and I try my hand at social media to the best of my ability. I laid down my shears at the end of 2022 and I make my way around the salon most days shaking hands and kissing babies so to speak. I have come to realize that people want to know the owner and more importantly they want you to know them.

Terri, let's start with your story. We'd love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far. Upon graduating cosmetology school, I was recruited to work for a product company! Of course, I thought that meant being a stage artist but alas it meant cold calling salons to sell hairspray and shampoo. I was terrible! But while in a little 1200 sq. ft. hair salon on the Richardson/Dallas border I hit it off with the owner and within a month I owned it. My family was not very happy since I had never kept a job over 6 months. Almost 30 years later and 3 moves, I can officially say I love what I do and it rarely feels like work.
